Orange

Oranges are one of the most popular fruits around the world. They are round citrus fruits with finely-textured skin orange in color, same like their pulpy flesh, and range from from about two to three inches in diameter with sweet or bitter taste.

Oranges are widely grown in warm climates worldwide, generally available from winter through summer, and the flavours of oranges vary from sweet to sour. The fruit is commonly peeled and eaten fresh, or squeezed for its juice.

Juicy and sweet and renowned for its rich concentration of vitamin C, it is not surprising that research has shown that consumption of vegetables and fruits high in this nutrient is associated with a reduced risk of death from all causes including heart disease, stroke and cancer. In addition to their rich source of vitamin C, oranges also contains wide variety of phytonutrients. These phytonutrients include types of flavonoids that include hesperetin and naringenin, anthocyanins, hydroxycinnamic acids, and polyphenols. Herperidin is found in the peel and inner white pulp of the orange and is often removed by the processing of oranges into juice.

Health benefits of oranges continue with their fiber. One single orange provides 12.5% of the daily recommended value of fiber, which has been shown to reduce high cholesterol and can also help keep blood sugar levels under control. Oranges are also source of natural fruit sugar, a good source of thiamin, folate, vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene), potassium and calcium.
