A mango is definitely one of those fruits that people avoid buying mainly because they don’t know how to cut them. There is various ways to cut a mango and here is one of them.
First thing to keep in mind is when buying a mango look for the fruit with fragrant, fruity aroma and yield slightly to pressure from your thumb. It doesn’t need to be fully ripen as it will ripen sitting on your counter at home. You can also speed ripening process by putting mango into a paper bag. Once ripe, put it in the refrigerator.
Let’s cut a mango now. You’ll need a serrated knife with the jagged edge that you use to cut a loaf of bread. Because mangos are very slippery you need to be very careful when peeling a mango.
- Slice off the fattest part on both sides of the mango (this is sometimes called the “cheek”).
- Score the “cheek” next. That means to make shallow cuts with a paring knife. Make each cut about 1 centimetre apart, and then turn the “cheek” and make perpendicular cuts as well.
- Once scored, press the back side of the mango so that all the flesh is standing at attention. You can serve it this way or trim off the flesh from the skin.
Once cut and prepared, a mango should be eaten within a day or two.
